Motherfucking Thrash Metal.

Dave Rotten is a name that is known more for his brutal death metal projects and for running the excellent Spanish extreme metal label Xtreem Music. Having personally already heard his works on bands like Avulsed, Christ Denied and Putrevore among many others, it is indeed quite interesting to hear him finally break out of his typecast as a death metal force to reckon with. Instead of the usual brutal death metal style of his other projects, Holycide instead presents a sound that leans more towards the speed and recklessness of old school thrash metal, with Toxic Mutation being the band’s brand new EP release. So can Dave Rotten live up to the hype created?

It seems that genres are merely names for him, as the material on Toxic Mutation goes to show that the difference in genre is no obstacle for him. Having brought together an excellent lineup, right from the get go the aural assault is relentless, as one is brought back to the good, glory days of early thrash metal. The high-octane attack that Holycide presents to the listener is quickly reminiscent of the works of bands such as Dark Angel (hardly surprising, considering the inclusion of a cover of Merciless Death on the EP), Sadus, Vio-lence and even Demolition Hammer, along with that slight touch of death metal element in their playing. The recklessness and chaos that the band indulges in also brings to mind the early material of Sodom or Slayer.

At the same time, the thing that made this release particularly charming was the ability to not compromise on that sense of sanity and melody in the band’s playing despite the chaos that goes on around. For instance, towards the end of No Escape, guitarists Miguel and Salva managed to include a short melodic lick, which caught me by surprise but was also a nice touch for a well-balanced sound. In fact, throughout the record, the solos that are included are often of a rather melodic nature, which allows the guitarists to show off their versatility and abilities. On songs like Apocalypse Riders, this aspect is even used to create a dark and ominous atmosphere at the start of the track.

With Toxic Mutation and Holycide, Dave Rotten has once again proven his talents as a songwriting maestro, on top of displaying his versatility as a vocalist. While I can’t deny that I still enjoy his death metal material more – particularly the works on Christ Denied and Putrevore – Holycide‘s debut EP is one that any self-respecting old school thrash metal fan should not miss.

It was quite a surprise when I found out that Dave Rotten, the man with the most brutal vocals in Spain was also the vocalist of thrashmetal band. Dave, known from AVULSED, CHRIST DENIED, FAMISHGOD and many more, isn't known for being a thrash fanatic. At least, not by me. So, not knowing what to expect, I sat down and took a careful listen. Though at times maybe a bit forced, Dave's vocals sound pretty good, especially considering he usually sing much, much, MUCH lower! However, Dave isn't the star of the band. The thrashmetal laid down by the rest of the band sounds above all expectations. Riffing as tight as can be, furious drumming and classic thrash solos make this album one that could easily be adopted into any thrashmetal collection.

The overall sound of the band is quite German. Bands like SODOM and KREATOR come to mind, but also DARK ANGEL has left its mark on this Spanish band. However, when listening to the last track of the album, the DARK ANGEL cover MERCILESS DEATH you can clearly hear that HOLYCIDE that has more influences than DARK ANGEL alone. All in all though, TOXIC MUTATION took me by surprise!

It has long been thought that time travel is a feat that mankind will never possess the technology to accomplish. I am here to tell you, everyone is intensely wrong. It turns out the secret for time travel has been waiting in Madrid Spain, with HOLYCIDE, and their debut EP release, "Toxic Mutation". The band was originally just a side project meant to go no further than the garage. A means of fun for some good friends. Thanks to some pretty lucky twists of fate, almost a decade after the bands genesis, HOLYCIDE is helping us get back to what was possibly the best time to be a metalhead. A time when denim ruled and vests were adorned with what was then "hot off the press" patches from TESTAMENT, EXODUS, and SLAYER. For those of you younger, or less educated readers out there, I'm talking of course about the 80's.

Musically, 80's Thrash was known for and made its name on speed and high intensity. HOLYCIDE, stay completely true to this benchmark. I can think of no better example of this than on their smash hit, "Life Turned To Dust". From the beginning to the bitter end, your hair will be blown back, (provided of course you still have hair), by the white knuckle head-rush that is the guitar playing of Miguel Barez and Salva Esteban. The pair make a killer team at the core of each individual song. The soloing however, seems to borrow a little too heavily from Kirk Hammett's tones and structuring. But when you mix that with some Dave Mustaine level technicality like these boys do, its a sin that is easily forgiven. At one point during the solo in "Life After Dust", there is a progressive tremolo scale that I swear had me checking to see if my eyebrows had in fact, been melted away.

The album also features some thunderous bass which is a rare thing with modern Thrash bands. That's not to say that other Thrash bass players are terrible, I just rather enjoyed being able to actually hear what is being played. When you pair this with the mad axe playing, and true to form Thrash drumming, It’s hard to deny this album the respect it deserves. In all honesty, the only criticism I have is on the vocal end. At points the vocals seem to be flatter than my ear would like them to be and a tad more power wouldn't hurt.

So, if you're ready for a trip back to the dawn of some of the best music to ever be played, I highly recommend picking up HOLYCIDE's debut, "Toxic Mutations". And don't worry, your eyebrow's will grow back.

Two Guys Metal Reviews (fra) 13.04.2015
Some days all is not well in the world. You feel yourself drowning in misery and you try to find respite in the terror driven worlds that surround you. What is a young man to do when the entire world seems to have him down? Listen to some thrash fucking metal of course. The balls out attack of Holycide is just the remedy one needs to find peace in a world of shit. Sure every day is pain and at times there is literally no reason to find joy in the world, but when you listen to Holycide thrash your eyes out with frilly riffs and harsh vocals you suddenly get a sense of peace.

There is a sense of inhuman desperation in these riffs, you feel yourself holding on for dear life as Holycide shake rattle and roll their way into your heart. There is a sense of catharsis here that grabs you by the hair and bashes you into a wall. Holycide play off a lot of thrash tropes, yet they never seem boring. Instead there angular and precise riffs blare out with machine gun accuracy driving each point home and beating the listener into the dirt. The twisted attack helps along the process too, the way the vocals seem almost torn out of the bands frontman is impressive, providing a harsh flavor to accent chaotic music.

At the end of the day there isn't much more to say about a thrash band who aren't afraid to say it like it is. With palatable grooves that will have you two stepping from the first Holycide know what it means to get bodies moving, crashing into each other and tearing each other open in the name of the lords of thrash. Though this is just an EP Toxic Mutation definitely hints at great things to come for this band And while some of the songs could be shorter (And with fewer gang vocals please!) these guys certainly are perfecting a masterful formula.

Voices From the Darkside (ger) 08.03.2015
It's been a good while since I've stumbled across a new interesting Thrash release, though I had my hopes this would be such, as the last track on this album caught my eyes, a cover version of my favorite DARK ANGEL track 'Merciless Death', a track so awesome that it is featured on both DARK ANGEL's debut album "We Have Arrived" and the sophomore "Darkness Descends". As I am writing this review I know who is in the band, though it took me more than 10 listens to get some background info about what I was listening to. Musically we are getting a good dose late 80s early 90s American West Coast Thrash Metal with a good dose of ditto European, think EXODUS, DARK ANGEL, KREATOR, VIO-LENCE and bands in that vein, what's not to like, if that is done right? And this is, actually so well that I thought it was a new fierce band from the Bay Area showing some teeth and aggression. That wasn't the case, HOLYCIDE hails from Spain and is lead by some old geezers, even though there are a couple of youngans involved. I wouldn't in a 1000 years have guessed, that guttural growl monster per excellence Dave Rotten, could scream as he does, on this album, damn. If you like your Thrash in the vein of the bands mentioned so far, HOLYCIDE is a band to check out, nostalgic, intense and sounding just as music as this should. This is not about re-inventing anything, this is about love to the genre, and that can be heard, the 25 minutes on this recording flies by, and so does the imaginary long hair on my head, as I headbang along. And then we have that cover version of DARK ANGEL's 'Merciless Death', does that sound right? Hell yeah, it sounds just as it should, like a DARK ANGEL! HOLYCIDE has arrived!

Apparently the seed for Holycide was already sown by Dave Rotten in 2004. We know Rotten as the frontman of death metal acts like Avulsed, Christ Denied or Putrevore of course. Next to that he has quite a few other bands going on as well and he runs the Xtreem Music label. A busy bee so to speak. The wish to have a thrash metal band was there as well. Holycide started out as a duo and Rotten worked with two different guitarists on this band. Things moved forward from 2012 onwards. In 2013 the first demo with two songs appeared and it was recorded as a trio. In the meantime Holycide has turned into a five piece.

The thrash Holycide recorded on ‘Toxic Mutation’ refers to the more aggressive bands from the 80s. Bands like Dark Angel, Infernal Majesty, Atrophy, Coroner and Sacrifice are mentioned as an influence. Holycide even recorded a cover of the Dark Angel classic ‘Merciless Death’. The five own compositions are decent although they don’t match the level of the material from the bands that influenced them. These songs are all middle of the road compositions. I was curious how Dave Rotten would use his vocals. A deep grunt doesn’t exactly fit thrash metal. Rotten uses his voice completely different within Holycide and he totally reminds me of the sound and style of Agnostic Front’s Roger Miret. As a debut MCD ‘Toxic Mutation’ is quite okay, but I won’t say it is essential.

Dazzled when heard the melodic elegance in every song-it's obvious that there is a touch of pleasure and satisfaction to hear the composition of melodies which they offer. Something memorable precisely when easily hear the given melodies, but it did not escape from balancing and assertiveness of them in creating harmonization of thrash metal. The composition of an extensive old thrash which successfully apply the aggressiveness intensively and consistently-makes this mind imagines a bloodbath on land of the dead-rude and have the desire to kill. Glad to feel the pride of thrash metal which they create inseparable from the structure and tempo which comfortable in these ears-not complicated , but simple and always ringing in our mind. Success in felt the sting of anger that peaked accessible from EP entitled ' Toxic Mutation' of a band formed by 'Dave Rotten' named ' Holycide '.

For us, ' Toxic Mutation' is a type of aggressive thrash with a harmonization of the melody that memorable, touching the soul and favors when be in a situation of anger. There is a desire to rebel when heard beats of drum - provokes something evil when heard the riffs of guitar that straightforward and resolute and creating a condition in which the anger easily to be disclosed when heard vomiting and screamed from vocals. All of that incorporated harmoniously in the mind-as preparation to commit bloodshed tonight-satisfying and always want to do that. 'No Escape ' and ' Blood Typhoon ' is an invitation to rebel and eradicate all the dirty officials. These songs began our enjoyment to the firmness of their music - kicking the boredom and successful played as the opening songs.

We are satisfied with rhythms are catchy in every song in this album - create these ears constantly tempted to hear this album. Continues to the following song titled ' Apocalypse Riders ' which has the longest duration in the album-solid concept and dynamic. These heads are also easily to head banging when hearing beats that given. ' Radiation Endgame ' and ' Life Turned Dust '- appears elegant and giving a mix of speed metal and thrash metal which balanced and harmonious and chose this song as our favorites although all songs that hear is interesting. No doubt if talking their musicality.

We can feel the music is catchy, attack and as a teaser of the anger. Not only that, they offer the perfection to the composition of music with emphasis on memorable melodies in the ears. Hear the character of melodic that given in enjoying thrash metal is an essential point for us to obtain the nuances of the music that they offer and 'Holycide' present for it.
